Charles William (Bill) Maynes, President of the Eurasia Foundation from 1997 to 2006 and President Emeritus since his retirement, died on 2 June, aged 68. With his death, says current Eurasia President, W Horton Beebe-Center, ‘a strong and impassioned voice in the field of foreign affairs and democracy building has been silenced … Bill’s intellectual passion for his work building vibrant, democratic societies in the Eurasia region was matched by his abundant warmth and humour. He had a unique ability to encourage people, build relationships, and exemplify an unwavering belief in the power of the non-profit sector. With his death there is now a deep void that will be felt far beyond the Eurasia Foundation.’ In his honour, the Eurasia Foundation has announced the launch of the Bill Maynes Future Leaders of Eurasia Fund to support new leaders from all walks of life in the Eurasia region. Prior to joining the Eurasia Foundation, Maynes served as the editor of Foreign Policy for 17 years. During his editorship, the journal won five awards for editorial excellence.
