The coffee house as a guide for life
As a lifelong coffee addict when I knew the EFC conference would be in Vienna I looked forward to sampling Viennese coffee, preferably in a suitably evocative setting, but I had not considered how the culture of the coffee house would become a metaphor for our discussion at our first in person gathering since Covid.

Multiple lessons from multiple crises: a five-step roadmap for philanthropy
It is day one at the conference. We are at Gartenbaukino, an iconic cinema in Vienna. In the opening plenary, Kumi Naidoo quotes Einstein; ‘The definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results.’ The 400 people in the room nods together.

As the 31st annual EFC conference became the first for me, I didn’t know what to expect. Striving for European best philanthropic practices, it was a huge surprise, that philanthropy in Ukraine and the rest of Europe has a lot in common and some Ukrainian practices are even more progressive.
