‘Impact Report: Climate Philanthropy Case Studies’ is the first philanthropic report from a Chinese environmental nonprofit at a global climate summit, according toe CEGA.

The report, introduced by CEGA members such as the Vanke Foundation, SEE Foundation, Changjiang Conservation Foundation, and the All-China Environment Federation, highlights key climate initiatives led by both private and public actors in China. It sheds light on the country’s growing role in global climate philanthropy, underscoring the potential of CSOs to engage the public and drive impactful climate action.

CEGA Co-Chairs Xie Xiaohui, Secretary General of the Vanke Foundation, and Yao Yao, Secretary General of the Alibaba Foundation, emphasized the importance of the report in showcasing China’s philanthropic efforts across diverse areas including carbon neutrality, ecosystem conservation, and corporate sustainability. They noted that it illustrates the bottom-up public participation that is central to China’s approach to climate action.

‘This report demonstrates China’s leadership in climate philanthropy and highlights the increasing role of civil society in accelerating the green transition,’ said Xie Xiaohui.

The report features case studies on projects like the Pilot Carbon-Neutral Community in Meisha and Zero Waste in the Forbidden City initiative, which focus on urban sustainability, waste reduction, and community engagement. The report also highlights China’s efforts in ecosystem restoration and the development of its first blue carbon credit program.

Ruiying Zhang, Executive Director of CEGA, introduced the Climate Philanthropy Partnership Initiative, launched in August 2024 to mobilize more philanthropic resources for climate action. The initiative aims to encourage corporate and individual donors to support climate projects with lasting public impact.

In the closing of their session presenting the impact report, ACEF’s Ni Yao stressed that their research serves as a call to action for grantmakers to channel more resources into tackling the global climate crisis.
