Philanthropic bodies in both Brazil and the Arab region announced major climate commitments at this year’s COP summit in the UAE.

Grupo de Institutos Fundações e Empresas (GIFE) in Brazil launched the Brazilian Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change. The initiative, described as a “common platform” and coordination of Brazilian philanthropy, will bring private social investment and civil society organisations together.

Brazil is one of the highest per capita greenhouse gas emitters in the world. GIFE’s commitment focuses on aligning resources, education, and operations to contribute effectively to climate mitigation, adaptation and damage repair.

“We recognise and value indigenous and traditional communities and their knowledge for the conservation of biomes, ecological heritage and the development of solutions. Given their vulnerability and high exposure to climate change, it is essential that we act to guarantee their rights and ensure there are fair compensation and reparation mechanisms,” GIFE said in a statement.

Adapting cities and urban life to become climate resilient is also on the agenda.

The spotlight on Brazil’s climate ambitions is set to intensify, with the hosting of presidency of the G20 group, the world’s biggest 20 economies, in Brazil.

The COP30 summit in 2025 will be held in the Amazon.

Similarly, the Arab Foundations Forum (AFF) also made commitments to formulate an Arab Regional Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change, bringing together an Arab perspective on climate solutions.

A regional framework for AFF members and the wider Arab region is intended to align with the International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change.
