The Covid-19 pandemic could have a long-term impact for the global LGBTI movement unless it adapts, finds new research from the Global Philanthropy Project. The upcoming report, which will be released on 21 January and will be discussed in an upcoming webinar, looking at the survey results from 24 of the leading foundations and NGO intermediary funders supporting global LGBTI issues.

According to phase one of the research based on the May 2020 survey, grantee partners of LGBTI funders have shared a number of challenges that they have faced this year, offering much to consider for philanthropy as it approaches its funding practice. The challenges that partners have highlighted include:

• Shifting activities to respond to immediate needs of the communities that grantees serve.
• Significant impact on the lives of the communities they serve.
• Concerns about levels of future funding.
• Support with shifting communication practices.
• Challenges with lack of flexibility in other funding agreements.
• Requests to collect data around Covid or address Covid stigma.

The implications of the findings of the report’s research will be explored in a webinar on 28 January 2021 hosted by the Global Philanthropy Project. Panellists include Caroline Kouassiaman, Executive Director of Initiative Sankofa d’Afrique de l’Ouest (ISDAO); Nicky McIntyre, CEO of Foundation for a Just Society; April Pham, Senior Gender Advisor & Head of Gender Unit at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs; and Jessica Stern, Executive Director of OutRight Action International.
