Better Investment for Stunting Alleviation (BISA)

This programme brings together public, private and non-governmental sectors. The Power of Nutrition convened a partnership between donors Asia Philanthropy Circle (APC) and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and implementing partners Save the Children and Nutrition International to tackle stunting. A chronic condition, stunting not only affects children’s health and makes them more susceptible to disease and infection, but also impairs their mental and physical development.
BISA aims to tackle this through improving the nutritional status of adolescent girls, women of reproductive age and children under the age of two across two Indonesian provinces.
Each partner is pooling financial resources through this collaboration under one program, and bringing together the varied experiences of each stakeholder.
BISA is a five-year, $10m nutrition programme. APC provided the seed funding commitment of $2.5 million, channelled into The Power of Nutrition and specifically earmarked for a nutrition programme in Indonesia which would reduce stunting. The latter approached DFAT to provide the match funding, and then conducted a bid process, choosing Save the Children and Nutrition International, who each brought $2.5m.
The Indonesian government has developed a national prevention strategy for stunting (2018-2024), and in collaboration with the World Bank has launched a $420m Investing in Early Years Programme. BISA focuses on harnessing the existing will and resources available and draw on its implementing partners to provide community-level expertise and technical assistance to maximise the effectiveness of existing government services.
The BISA Inception Phase began in August 2019, and a full external launch is planned for June 2020.
