The Said Foundation’s Amal project has published a report showing the impact of arts and cultural engagement in increasing understanding between British Muslims and non-Muslims.

Amal is a pilot project launched by the Said Foundation in 2017 that made grants available in support of Muslim cultures and arts in the UK, with the objectives of increasing understanding between British Muslims and non-Muslims and to foster a stronger sense of belonging among Muslim communities in the UK.

In its pilot year, Amal worked with a range of artists and arts organisations and a selection of projects were carefully chosen to reflect diversity (gender, ethnicity, age, disability and type of organisation) and to encompass different art forms and cultural origins.

Evaluation of the projects formed the basis of a findings report that was published in April 2018. One of the main findings included that targeted funding can influence the thinking and approach of arts organisations and other funders.

Amal state while the success of its pilot has generated much goodwill both for Amal and its approach, consistent, long-term work is needed to prove the case further and have greater impact.
