The Partnership for Higher Education in Africa (PHEA), a joint venture of a number of US foundations, has announced that its seven members will continue their collaborative and individual grantmaking to strengthen higher education in Africa beyond their original ten-year commitment, which runs up to 2010. To date, joint investments by the partners – Ford, MacArthur, Rockefeller, Hewlett, Mellon and Kresge Foundations and the Carnegie Corporation of New York – include the purchase of increased satellite bandwidth by a consortium of Sub-Saharan African universities and the awarding of $350 million in grants to educational institutions in a number of African countries.
