Editorial – March 1999

  With one year as editor of Alliance behind me, I’d like to thank all those who’ve helped so far and who’ve agreed to help in the future – as editorial board members, regular column writers, one-off contributors, and now as funders. Without this support and  encouragement, publishing Alliance would not be possible. From now on, Alliance will be published quarterly and circulated much more widely than before. Editorial – Various themes

‘Beyond Aid’ is the theme of a conference being held in Ghana this April. I interpret this to mean not that ‘aid is finished’ but that there has been a radical reappraisal of the way effective support for the poor in the poorest countries is provided. The implication is that foundations, NGOs, companies, governments — in fact an alliance of interested parties – should become the vanguard of efforts to go beyond aid.
